The heady smell of youth filled me with such hope for the future. I was young, full of potential, and in love.
In love with the specter in front of me. William Carter, my current knight in shining armor, was the storm that threw me asunder all those years ago.
The pain and devastation he left in his wake was hard to forget… even decades later.
I didn’t plan it this way.
I was meant to keep an eye on her from a distance and then disappear into the crowd. But fate finally caught up to me, I guess.

A part of me was ready for this, but I can’t say the same for Kathleen Cruz.

Kathleen always found herself amongst my unruliest thoughts. When my mind couldn’t seem to slow down and keep quiet, it was always because of her.
Kathleen Cruz got under my skin in ways I could never wrap my head around, and it only made me want her more.
Her innocent blue eyes, sharp tongue, and educated manner had me in a chokehold. There was just no getting out of it. I was completely taken by her.
But, was I the right man for her?
The darkness that follows me constantly threatens to swallow her up, and there was always harm that nipped at her heels. She deserved so much more than a man who could dim her bright spirit.
But the thought of handing her to someone else filled me with even more darkness. She went against her principles by giving herself to me before marriage, and I’ll be damned to see her belong to another.
I just hoped God would put up with my selfishness for just a little longer.
This time, things would be different. I’ll keep her safe. I swear it.
