Overview: This is the sixth book in the Baker Family Saga. The Civil war is over and it is time for Linda to make her way back to the Willamette Valley. She starts back late in the season – the war didn’t end till April, two months after most people set out for the west coast – with Phillip and Major Thomas. Phillip plans to ask her father for her hand in marriage when they get there. They started the trip in a stage coach but had to abandon it and travel in a private wagon. The book starts after their hasty marriage and takes them through all the complications of starting late without the preparations that travelers on the Oregon trail usually made. The weather forces them to stay at Fort Laramie but the prejudices of the keepers of the fort force them to find shelter outside of the fort and ultimately force their way through late winter snow to safety.
