Overview: The Louie Knight novels are a series of cult detective novels written by Malcolm Pryce set in an alternative universe of the Welsh town of Aberystwyth, and centring on Aberystwyth’s one private eye Louie Knight. While rich in black humour, and Chandleresque dialogue, the stories contain serious elements – humour is derived from the Welsh flavour of what is essentially an American style, with nods to the Vietnam war and gangster movies. The main religions in this alternative Wales are both Christianity and the druids, who are power mad gangsters, who use murder, extortion, prostitution, and even the sweet ladies of the sweet justice league to maintain their influence.

1. Aberystwyth Mon Amour
Schoolboys are disappearing all over Aberystwyth and nobody knows why. Louie Knight, the town’s private investigator, soon realises that it is going to take more than a double ripple from Sospan, the philosopher cum ice-cream seller, to help find out what is happening to these boys and whether or not Lovespoon, the Welsh teacher, Grand Wizard of the Druids and controller of the town, is more than just a sinister bully. And just who was Gwenno Guevara?
2. Last Tango In Aberystwyth
To the girls who came to make it big in the town’s ‘What the Butler Saw’ movie industry, Aberystwyth was the town of broken dreams. To Dean Morgan who taught at the Faculty of Undertaking, it was just a place to get course materials. Private detective Louie Knight has just received a visit from a mysterious stranger called Raspiwtin asking him to track down a dead man called Iestyn Probert. Originally hanged for his part in the infamous raid on the Coliseum cinema, Iestyn Probert was later seen alive and well and boarding a bus to Aberaeron. Did he escape the hangman’s noose? Or could there be some truth to the rumours that he was resuscitated by aliens?
