Overview: Near the end of the U.S. Civil War, a young Texan named Jack Saylor enlists tin the Confederate Army to help fight for the Cause. He soon realizes that Army service was not the dashing adventurous experience he had envisioned it to be. During a lull in the action he meets a beautiful young nurse named Marie Hayes who quickly captures his heart. But just as the relationship takes hold, Jack is thrust into a series of dangerous battles with the enemy, a band of Indians, and his own personal demons as the relationship with the nurse begins to unravel. In the coming months, Jack is forced to rethink everything he ever thought about life and people in general. As circumstances and events began to overwhelm him, he starts to wonder if everything he tries to do is nothing but a lost cause.
