01 The Mercenary’s Blade
England, September 1642 …. The King has raised his standard in Nottingham to summon those loyal to the crown to fight for him against his own Parliament.
Gideon Lennox, an idealistic young lawyer from London, is in County Durham being paid to find a man and deliver a message. Having failed in the task that originally brought him north, Gideon needs to prove himself.
The man he seeks is the traitor Philip Lord, a notorious mercenary commander, with a reputation for brutality gained in the wars raging across Europe. When Gideon encounters Lord, he is abducted and set to investigate strange happenings in a Weardale village.
As he attempts to uncover the truth behind accusations of witchcraft – and the murder of the witchfinder in Pethridge – the lawyer is faced with more questions than answers.
He is convinced that Lord must somehow be involved until a gory discovery proves to him that whoever might be behind the strange events, it is not the accused women – or Lord.
Just as Gideon begins to realise that more than one shadowy hand is moving the pieces in the dangerous game being played out in Pethridge, he is seized and accused of the murder himself.
The lawyer must somehow escape – or become a victim of the conspiracy he needs to bring to light.

As they occupy the manor house of Wrathby in Ryedale, they are confronted with the suspicious death of a servant – and talk of a curse which has afflicted the Belamy family for generations.
Lord’s new captain, Mags, is plotting to gain greater influence within the company and his popularity with the men begins to cause problems.
As tensions increase, a guest of Lady Belamy is poisoned and Gideon is tasked by Lord with investigating both murders, making himself a target for the killer.
When an attempt is made on the life of the infant baron, Zahara, the enigmatic beauty who travels with Lord and has captured Gideon’s heart, is accused.
In order to save the woman he loves, Gideon has to trust an ally of his enemy.
Zahara’s life – and his own – will hang in the balance.

Former lawyer, Gideon Lennox, finds himself an unwilling participant fighting in the king’s army alongside Philip Lord, a notorious mercenary commander with a mysterious past.
After enduring the horror and brutality of battle, Gideon is confronted with an even greater challenge. Lady Catherine de Bouquelemont, an accomplished Royalist spy and the woman Lord loves, has been betrayed and captured.
Uncovering the identity of the traitor, Gideon plays a dangerous game as he gains entry to the Parliamentarian held town of Warwick to discover the whereabouts of Lady Catherine.

But Anders stands accused of the murder of Demoiselle Geneviève Tasse, maid and companion to Richelieu’s beloved niece, who was drugged with laudanum and raped even as Richelieu was on his death bed elsewhere in the same building.
With the requirements of diplomacy tying Lord’s hands, it falls to Gideon to uncover the killer and deliver Anders from trial and execution.
