Looneyhime by Christopher Leopold

Overview: Tread carefully, you are entering Looneyhime,‘Bloody Looneyhime’, where Christopher Leopold has crossed into new territory. After probing some of the more peripheral nerve points of the war in his Blood and Guts is Going Nuts and Casablack Christopher Leopold does a lobotomy on the criminal insanity that seemed in those last days of the war to infect even Hitler’s conquerors, with seemingly only one man immune — a fastidious pacifist called Sigi Perluger, former spoilt playboy of Berlin.
Of course, it had to be the most incompetent battalion in the British Second Army Group, led by Montgomery’s crankiest colonel, that stumbled on it — a gemütlich little Lower Saxon spa town called Liineheim. It boasted a fine late Gothic Rathaus, an imposing 1890s steel girder bridge named after Prinz Hohenlohe over a Schubertian trout stream, the River Hase. And just one Baedeker-rated feature —the crennelated Kaiserin Augusta Institute which, as it happened, housed some of the most demented minds in Germany.
They nicknamed it ‘Looneyhime’ with good reason, and one’s guess is that ho member of Colonel Wentworth’s go-slow battalion ever exactly planned a return match against Doctor Lange’s Lunatics. This last grimmest manifestation of Goebbels’ Totalische Krieg was enough to send shudders down the spine of any sane Tommy.
In Looneyhime Christopher Leopold uses his full armoury of black humour and irony in the long-held belief that there are some things in life so terrible that the only remaining human reaction is to laugh. Though he readily concedes this could be a Pavlovian reflex.
Genre: Fiction > General Fiction/Classics > Humor
CHRISTOPHER LEOPOLD was educated in Dublin and at Oxford. Though he was a child during the Second World War, it remains one of his obsessions. He has travelled internationally as a freelance journalist, and is at present employed as a consultant to a large American corporation. Among his passions are 1940s films, Bogart, Bergman, France, in whatever order the reader cares to take them. Looneyhime is his third novel.
