Genre: Psychological Thriller | Mystery
#1 – Report for Murder:
Freelance journalist Lindsay Gordon is strapped for cash – otherwise she would never have agreed to cover a fundraising gala at Derbyshire House Girls’ School. But when the star attraction is found garrotted with her own cello string, Lindsay finds herself investigating a vicious murder. Who had the key to the locked room in which the body was found? And who could have slipped out of the half at just the right time to commit this calculated and cold-blooding crime?
#2 – Common Murder:
A protest group hits the headlines when unrest explodes into murder. Already on the scene, journalist Lindsay Gordon desperately tries to strike a balance between personal and professional responsibilities. As she peels back the layers of deception surrounding the protest and its opponents, she finds that no one – ratepayer or reporter, policeman or peace woman – seems wholly above suspicion. Then Lindsay uncovers a truth that even she can scarcely believe…
#3 – Deadline for Murder:
In her third outing, lesbian ace reporter and amateur detective Lindsay Gordon returns from self-imposed European exile to Glasgow, Scotland, to find her estranged lover Cordelia, who–surprise!–has a new honey, the fetching Claire Ogilvie, whose ex-lover Jackie Mitchell is behind bars for murdering Alison Maxwell, who was another ex of Lindsay’s as well as of about half of Glasgow and the defensive line of the L.A. Raiders. Against her better judgment, intrepid Lindsay takes on the job of securing Jackie’s release, only to find herself caught up in a maze of lies, alibis with tricky time schemes, blackmail, prostitution, and more as she discovers a seemingly endless supply of suspects with ample motivation to kill the conniving Alison. McDermid’s depictions of Glasgow police procedures are a bit incredible, but strongly drawn characters and interesting use of U.K. slang keep the story moving smartly.
#4 – Union Jack aka Conferences Are Murder:
Lindsay Gordon is not pleased when she has to leave California to research women’s roles in the trade union movement. Her memories of the British Left were not pleasant. The discovery that Tom "Union" Jack has gained even more power, and his violent death leaves Lindsay suspect number one.
#5 – Booked For Murder:
In order to clear her friend of suspicion, lesbian-feminist journalist Lindsay Gordon investigates the murder of a best-selling novelist. Apparently, the novelist’s death followed a murder scenario in her as-yet-unpublished new book, so Lindsay winds up in the dog-eat-dog world of London publishing.
#6 – Hostage to Murder:
Lindsay Gordon—investigative journalist, tenacious sleuth and unashamed lesbian—is facing a midlife crisis. Back in her native Scotland after a long absence, she has no job, no friends and no desire to even think about her girlfriend’s worrying preoccupations. A chance encounter with freelance reporter Rory McLaren offers her an irresistible invitation to open a new chapter in her life. From there it is just a short step to political corruption and other juicy stories—all welcome distractions from Lindsay’s problems at home. But when a local car dealer’s stepson is kidnapped, Lindsay and Rory trade journalism for detection. The trail leads them to St. Petersburg and a dangerous snatch-back operation that will test Lindsay to her absolute limits in every area of her life.
