Overview: The studies reprinted below all derive in one way or another from a programme of research on the Hospitallers in the period from 1291 onwards. The only complete history of the Hospitallers at Rhodes from 1306 to 1522 which is firmly based on the archives is still t hat of Giacomo Bosio who died in 1629. The work of Joseph Delaville le Roulx was interrupted by his death and reached only to 1421; it was published as Les Hospitaliers a Rhodes jusqu’a la mort de Philibert de Naillac: 1310-1421 (Paris, 1913 ), and was reprinted by Variorum Reprints in 1974. As what is, in effect, a suppl ement to it Variorum Reprints republished twentyfour articles of mine in my e arlier volume in their Collected Studies series, The Hospitallers in Cyprus, Rhodes, Greece and the West: 1291-1440 (London, 1978 ). The present collection adds to these publications a further sixteen studies which widen the theme in three particular directions: the historiography of the Order of the Hospital; Latin intervention and set tlement in mainland Greece in which the Hospit al was involved; and t he changing nature of Western attitudes to the crusad e, which was the maj or concern of t he Hospit al as a mili tary order and which was increasingly directed towards the defence of Latin Greece .
