Overview: Born in Lancashire, I’ve been a teacher, bookseller and in a mad moment, a smallholder on the freezing fells of the Lake District where I tried my hand at the ‘good life’, kept sheep and hens, various orphaned cats and dogs, built drystone walls, planted a small wood and even learned how to make jam. I now spend the winter in Spain and summer in the UK. I have now published 48 books including many bestselling family sagas and historical novels.
Genre: General Fiction/Classics
Gracie’s Sin
In 1942, three young women craving adventure join the Women’s Timber Corps, all for different reasons. After the rigours of forestry training in Cornwall and a spell as acting air-raid wardens, the trio are posted to the Lake District. But their enemy is the War, and faith and friendship are tested to the utmost.
Kitty Little
Three girls are seeking escape. Each of them is captivated by the travelling theater, each is pretending to be someone she is not, and all are in love with the same man. Katherine is escaping her marriage and throws herself into an acting career, Charlotte can have any man she wants, and she wants Archie—whoever is standing in her way, and Esme is relishing in the theater life as a stark contrast to her life as a parson’s daughter.
Lakeland Lily
Lily Thorpe is a spirited, ambitious fisherman’s daughter, desperate to escape the poverty of her Lakeland home. When the rich Clermont-Read family spoils her plans, Lily embarks on a personal quest for revenge and marries their only son, Bertie, a handsome indolent charmer. Rejected by his family, the young couple soon find themselves battling against the very poverty Lily had hoped to escape… A twist of fate brings her the freedom she craves, but the price Lily must pay is vindictive snobbery from Bertie’s mother – as well as another far greater one, finally leading to a passionate affair with Nathan Monroe, a local steam boat captain. Now it is Lily who must protect herself against the threat of vengeance and decide who is more important, her husband or her lover.
Storm Clouds Over Broombank
Meg Turner is at last doing the job she loves. But life as a sheep farmer -unusual for a woman even in war time – proves tougher at times than she expected. With her loyalties divided she fears losing the one man she truly loves should he decide to go roving again. And dare she allow herself to love baby Lissa when her mother may return to claim her at any time? Kath is facing new challenges in the WAAF, but can she ever get over the guilt of leaving her child behind?
The Bobbin Girls
Alena wants nothing more than to spend the rest of her life with her childhood friend, Rob. However, Rob’s wealthy father tries to force them apart and they run away together. When they are discovered life becomes even harder—Rob is sent away to school and Alena has to start work in a bobbin mill.
Wishing Water
Lissa Turner seems to have everything a girl could ever hope for: she’s pretty and intelligent, has warm and devoted parents and a beautiful home in the Lake District. But despite her good fortune, Lissa is not happy. For her real mother abandoned Lissa while she was still a baby, and her feelings of confusion and vulnerability have persisted. As soon as she is old enough she takes up a job in Carreckwater, a lively village in the heart of Lakeland. She makes many friends but is wary of close relationships. Secretly Lissa wants nothing more than to be loved and cherished, but her lack of faith in herself launches her into a disastrous marriage with sinister consequences…
