Lady de Bourgh’s Lover: A Pride and Prejudice Variation by Leonor McLachlan
Requirements: .ePUB reader, 203 KB
Overview: Lady Catherine de Bourgh had grown weary of those seeking favour from her, as they all agreed with whatever she said but were incompetent when it came to the tasks requested. Furthermore, the clergyman from the Westerham parson conducted his duties with perfection while the former clergyman of Hunsford frequently came to Rosings uninvited, always finding pretexts and opportunities to ask for money. True, the parish was small, and he received a minimal stipend from his position in the Church of England, but the habit of regularly pestering the generous patronage of her ladyship and asking for additional generous contributions had become annoying.

For now, it seemed that Mr. Collins would be content with a modest living from his parish. However, the flatterers no longer inspired much confidence in Lady Catherine.

Providence intervened when she received a letter from another candidate who also had a warm recommendation from an important person whom her ladyship greatly esteemed. She decided not to inform Mr. Collins that he had received the Hunsford parish and invited the new candidate instead, who had a more evident grasp of appropriate expression in writing, free from unnecessary embellishments and phrases that served no purpose other than to flatter.
