Overview: Dunedin-based Baker was no stranger to bleakness. Chris was a long time sufferer of multiple sclerosis, a debilitating disease. His time spent living with Maori in the Far North provided Chris with a cultural experience beyond his Samoan/Celtic/ Anglo-Saxon origins. It was this colourful mix that gives Kokopu Dreams and Shadow Waters a uniquely New Zealand flavour. An environmental campaigner, a union delegate, journalist, bush and farm worker, Chris lived in the Kiwi tradition of ‘give it a go ambition’. It was this ambition and determination which propels the protagonists in Chris’s novels to move on from the bleakness and devastation caused by an apocalyptic event.
Chris passed away on 23 May 2013.

#1 – Kokopu Dreams (2000)
"When the fire started to die down, Sean said goodbye to Uncle Wire, to his family, to the place that had been his home, and started out across the paddock. It was an eight-kilometre walk into Ngahere, about two hours. He could have driven, but the keys to both his car and Uncle Wire’s truck had been in the burning houses, and hot wiring vehicles was not among his life skills. Instinct kept him moving slowly, giving him time to get his head around the things he suspected he’d find. Sean’s dread grew with every step." When a mutant strand of the calicivirus wipes out his family, friends and community, Sean is motivated by his instinct to survive. Driven by dreams and expectation, Sean sets off with his horse and dog. Where is he going? What will he find? And who are the crazy Maeroero messing with his head?
#2 – Shadow Waters (2006)
A devastating epidemic due to the revenge of the Maeroero – creatures traditionally believed to have inhabited the hills and forests before the first waka arrived in New Zealand, has killed most of the population. Shadow Waters is a continuation of the survivors’ struggle against the demons and fearful creatures that have taken over the landscape. Everything is broken down to elements, myths, and a kind of Wild West. Like The Lord of the Rings the quest aspect of Shadow Waters is strong, sharing an episodic structure, a great many fights and an assortment of dead bodies.
