Overview: The boy named Benjamin had been coming into the shop for going on two years. He didn’t know that the shop owner, Goodturn, had been carefully observing him. Outwardly the boy wasn’t much different than other teens. Except for the limp. And the damaged eye. If you stopped there you wouldn’t see how decent he was, and how the disfiguring injuries hadn’t warped him. They’d made him stronger, and there was the most important thing: what the boy might become. Goodturn had held back, he hadn’t wanted to risk scaring him off. If Benjamin fled again that would definitely slow things down.
Today everything had changed.
What Benjamin and his friends had witnessed had set things in motion. Goodturn had seen him manifest his knack, one of them at least, and heard enough to guess that the boy had been taking chances by performing in public. God knew who, or what, had taken notice. If others figured out what the boy represented they would try to use him. Or kill him. Goodturn had put too much time into getting things to line up to let that happen. Now he was going to have to move more quickly than he would like, but now it was necessary. It wouldn’t erase the deaths Goodturn was responsible for, but it would change the future. And maybe save a few lives.
He’d have to trust the boy and convince Benjamin to trust him, because time had just run out.
