Overview: Like my protagonist Jamie Brodie, I’m an academic librarian who enjoys a good mystery! When most kids were reading Nancy Drew, I was already into Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot. Whereas some kids had an imaginary friend, I had an entire town, and entertained myself for hours making up adventures for the people who gradually morphed into Jamie Brodie and his family. Several years ago it occurred to me that solving a crime has some similarities to answering a particularly difficult research question – we gather background information, look for clues, and eventually put the pieces of the puzzle together. I decided I’d like to read about an academic librarian who helped solve crimes through research; when I couldn’t find what I was looking for, I decided to write the stories I’d like to read.

#1 – Painted to Death
After eighteen years with the Los Angeles Police Department, Kevin Brodie is starting his new career as a social worker with the District Attorney’s Bureau of Victim Services. He’s meshing with his new partner, Jamilah Daly, and his first client encounter goes well. Life is good…except he can’t figure out why Jon Eckhoff’s victim looks familiar.
Jon’s first case as a Homicide Special detective is a French artist named Genevieve Lemieux, strangled and tossed into a ravine near the Getty Museum. According to the French Consulate, Genevieve hasn’t been to the U.S. since 2002. Who would want Genevieve dead? One of the art gallery owners with whom she’s been negotiating? One of the rotating cast of young men seen with her in newspaper photos?
When Jon learns that Genevieve was born in California and has changed her name, Kevin realizes why she looks familiar. That realization leads Kevin and Jon to a man who Kevin never dreamed he’d see again. But is the man also a victim? Or is he a killer?
#2 – Soaked to Death
After Stephen Atcheson was fired from UCLA’s Young Research Library, no one expected that he’d resurface – literally – floating in the Stone Canyon Reservoir with a bullet hole in the back of his head. It falls on the LAPD to solve the case, and it falls on Kevin Brodie and Jamilah Daly to deal with Stephen’s mom and sister. Mom is grieving. Sister, not so much. Kevin has to set aside his dislike of Stephen to comfort Mom while Jamilah tries to figure out why Sister is so squirrely. Where is Stephen’s alleged girlfriend? Was his script really in production? Will PayPal respond to a search warrant? And will the new cost-cutting District Attorney end Kevin and Jamilah’s partnership?
