Overview: Hello Everyone!
It’s me Jake! I’m your typical kid that loves playing and watching sports, hanging with my friends and wishing for snow days. I live with my mom and dad in Maryland and I actually DO have a similar diabolical sister like the one I wrote about in Just Jake. I like to think of the book as semi-autobiographical. Lacrosse and basketball are my sports of choice and I love the Celtics, Patriots and the Red Sox.
I started writing in elementary school. Not because I had some burning passion for typing out my thoughts. Nope. I was FORCED to write by my mom; part of her wicked plot to ruin my chances of a carefree and fun summer.
After a few years of practice, I started to love writing. At the same time I was reading more and what annoyed the heck out of me was that most of the middle grade fiction was written for girls. I should know, because unfortunately, I was the hand-me-down recipient of all my big sister’s drama filled, gossipy paperbacks.
So one day, I decided to write a book loosely based on my life. It was story written from a boy’s perspective about school, being the new kid and all the characters and jerks along the way. When I was finished, and sorry if this sounds braggy, I thought it was really funny. A couple of my friends read it and they laughed a lot so that’s when I began my quest to get the book published.
After some research I figured out I needed a literary agent. Next day I made a list of agents (they all live in New York City for some reason) and started calling. I was 12 years old at the time and for some unknown reason, a few of the agents actually got on the phone and talked to me. That was scary!
I was INCREDIBLY lucky to get signed by Writer’s House (thanks again Dan!) who negotiated my publishing deal with Grosset & Dunlap which is an imprint of Penguin Group (USA).
It’s been two crazy years since I started down this publishing road and my first book is finally coming out in February 2014. One thing I’ve found out about the publishing biz is that the wheels turn slowly. It takes a LONG time to get a book published. But, I’m almost finished with book #2 and I am looking forward to many more in the years to come. Thanks Mom for being so sinister.

Sixth grader Jake Ali Mathews is slowly climbing his way back up the ladder of popularity. Until Jake’s beloved teacher, Mrs. Pilsner, has a baby and the students in Jake’s homeroom are handed off to the super-scary substitute, Ms. Cane. Rather than teach through traditional methods, Ms. Cane decides to have these go-getters help her with a fledgling pet-grooming company. Dogs, cats, and more get bathed, popularity struggles become boardroom struggles, and Jake’s friendship with Michael is tested.
