Forty Words For Sorrow (John Cardinal and Lise Delorme #1):
In the quiet Canadian town of Algonquin Bay, a frozen body has been found in an abandoned mine shaft. She is quickly identified as Katie Pine, a teenager who had disappeared months ago. At the time, Detective John Cardinal insisted that Katie was no ordinary runaway. His relentless pursuit and refusal to give up on the case got him demoted from Homicide. But now the Canadian police force wants Cardinal back on the case – with a new associate by his side. And as these two untrusting partners gather evidence of a serial murder spree, a pair of sociopaths is closing in on the next victim.
Black Fly Season (John Cardinal and Lise Delorme #3):
It’s early summer in Algonquin Bay and the black flies aren’t the only ones out for blood. Someone is trying to kill a young red-haired woman, but after being shot in the head with a small-calibre weapon she cannot remember her own name or where she’s from, let alone why anyone would want to hurt her. Then a body turns up, horribly mutilated. Wombat Guthrie, biker and drug dealer, has taken his last ride. It seems inconceivable that the two cases could be linked, but as detectives Cardinal and Delorme pursue their invesigations the name ‘Red Bear’ keeps cropping up. An Iroquois shaman, Red Bear has recently moved into the drug trade, enlisting the aid of the spirit world to direct his followers to rival gangs’ drugs and money. In return, the ‘spirits’ demand sacrifice — human sacrifice. As the mysterious young woman slowly regains her memory, Cardinal begins to suspect that she may not be so innocent after all, and that her recovered ‘memories’ may not be the whole truth.
The Fields of Grief aka By the Time You Read This (John Cardinal and Lise Delorme #4):
For years, John Cardinal’s wife, Catherine, has battled severe depression. People are saddened when she finally takes her own life, but they are not really surprised. Cardinal, of course, is devastated. Despite the suicide note in Catherine’s own handwriting and the coroner’s finding that there is no evidence of foul play, Cardinal cannot bring himself to believe that Catherine has really killed herself. When hateful notes about his wife’s death begin to arrive in the mail, he begins to suspect murder – perhaps revenge from one of the many criminals he has put away over the years. But because the police have not opened a case, he is forced to investigate on his own.
Crime Machine (John Cardinal and Lise Delorme #5):
A year after the death of his beloved and troubled wife, Catherine, John Cardinal has moved into a new, but very humid, condo. He has fallen into an easy routine of work on cold case files and platonic movie nights with friend and colleague Lise Delorme. The quiet of a snow-covered Algonquin Bay is shattered when the decapitated bodies of two people are found in a summer home on Trout Lake. The victims, visitors from Russia, are in Algonquin Bay attending the annual fur auction. This is by no means a routine murder investigation as Cardinal soon discovers, but a horrific piece of a very twisted puzzle.
Until The Night (John Cardinal and Lise Delorme #6):
It’s not unusual for John Cardinal to be hauled out of a warm bed on a cold night in Algonquin Bay to investigate a murder. And at first this dead body, sprawled in the parking lot of Motel 17, looks pretty run of the mill: the corpse has a big bootprint on his neck, and the likely suspect is his lover’s outraged husband. But the lover has gone missing. And then Delorme, following a hunch, locates another missing woman, a senator’s wife from Ottawa, frozen in the ruins of an abandoned hotel way back in the woods. Spookily, she was chained up and abandoned wearing a new winter parka and boots, with a thermos beside her–as if her murderer was giving her a whisper of a chance at survival.
