Overview: This book calls for a return to the text in a sanitized historical criticism that sets aside a large number of traditional issues concerning Literarkritik (source criticism), Religionsgeschichte (history of religion), and the Johannine community and focuses instead on the text as we have it. Drawing on insights from narrative criticism, it articulates a narrative philosophical approach which allows the reader to find both literary and thematic coherence in John 1, 2–4, 5–6, 7–8, 9–10, 11–12, 13–17, and 18–20. An analysis of John 1:1–34 leads to the formulation of a Johannine cosmological theory of the combined presence of (cognitive) logos (the divine plan) and (material) pneuma (spirit) in Jesus—along the lines of a similar combination to be found in contemporary Stoicism. It shows the Gospel’s use of this theory to bring out the epistemological and ethical underpinnings of its basic theme: that Jesus was not fully understood during his lifetime, when he alone was in possession of the pneuma, and only became fully understood on his death and resurrection once initial believers had also received the pneuma. The last two chapters address the much-debated questions of John’s relationship with the Synoptic Gospels (primarily Mark), with Paul, and with Judaism, his use of imagery, and his eschatology. Throughout, the book rejects finding elements of Platonism and ‘realized eschatology’ in John, thus presenting an alternative to the classic treatment by C. H. Dodd in An Interpretation of the Fourth Gospel
