An Amazing Final Gift. Reviewed by pingclang on Nov. 26, 2012.

Joe Kubert, a man who achieved so much in his life within the industry and without, passed away in August. He was working on this book when he was taken to the drawing board reserved for him in Heaven. I went in to this issue with his death full on my mind. Thinking of Hawkman and Sergeant Rock. Thinking of his two sons still carrying on his legacy. Mr. Kubert was an amazing artist, a great writer and from what I have read, a good man.

          Hawkman, By Joe Kubert:

There is nothing I can say that will express how completely and utterly amazing this story was. It felt like opening a time capsule, like I was back in the sixties reading an issue of Hawkman. Not only is the story so well done, but it is a self-contained masterpiece that will leave your feeling something. Not because of some deep message but because in it`s simplicity, in the soft moral it suggests, it makes you think on comics today and why this isn’t done more often. The story is short but beautiful and Mr. Kubert did an amazing job. As for the art, it’s Joe Kubert. Expect nothing but amazingly beautiful visuals. The characters look great and the colors fit it so well. What needs be said?

Angel and the Ape, By Brian Buniak

I laughed my ass off at this book. This reminds me of some of the old 1940’s strips and just takes you back to a time period where you may not have grown-up but you feel like you’ve been there. It’s a great little story with some good laughs and a funny little twist to it. As for the art it again has pure nostalgia and looks great like it jumped straight out of the past.

          Spit, By Joe Kubert

This isn’t quite what we’re used to in comics, even stuff from way back when. This is a great little story about a poor orphan and I have to say that even though it has nothing to do with heroes or comedy, it is really amazing. I fell in love with it within the first couple of panels, it’s just that special and different. As for the art, I’m not sure who did it, I think it was Mr. Kubert but it doesn’t look like him due to it being uninked which fit the story so well it was like a mould.

          U.S.S Stevens, By Sam Glanzman

This final section of the book is a definite throwback to the days after WWII. It contains two stories from the War and each one is beautifully told and leaves you feeling something deep for those men. I don’t really know the words to use to describe it, the book shows us not the glories of war but the tragedies but with respect and love for the men within. As for the art it was fantastic and very classic. It was a gorgeous display of such horrors as only war can provide. Amazing.

All that said, I think, without a doubt, this is the best book of the year. Not only is each story a blast from the past but a display of what story telling can be. Rest in Peace, Mr. Kubert and thank you for this final gem.
