1. Jobe’s Daughter
Jobe Carson is a private detective of circumstance—as in “victim of circumstance.” His wife mysteriously disappeared while she was out on a run one evening, leaving Jobe with the emotional, practical, and financial responsibilities of being a single father of three children: Kiah—a grumbling sharp-tongued 18-year-old; Jack—16-year-old sport, videogame, and paintball enthusiast; and his only daughter, Miranda, Mir for short, wise beyond her 11 almost 12 years. His detective career is also hampered by the local police suspecting he may be responsible for his wife’s disappearance. Jobe’s current problem is finding the time, amidst his fatherhood duties, to solve a crime involving the murder, dismemberment and shrink-wrapping of a nameless person who appears to be a victim of food network culture interpreted by a psychopath. Hired by a less than scrupulous insurance company, Jobe first has to find out who the poor scattered dead person is, then who carved him up.

2. Jobe’s Curse
Jobe Carson. Private Detective. Single Dad. Inveterate Grouser. And now he’s back. This time he’s running down a serial killer who’s picking off folks jogging in the woods. But what’s killing them? And can Jobe and his fractious family find a clear trail to the answer before someone else DNFs permanently? Jobe is out on a trail run when he witnesses a female jogger jerk suddenly and fall into a ravine. He calls the police, but they cart him off to jail. After getting sprung by his lawyer he sets out to clear his name and runs into a series of suspects including a backwoods hiker, a Vietnam Vet, and the furniture crafting Lesbian lover of the murdered woman’s mother—herself not above suspicion. Jobe is assisted by his two teenage boys and almost teenage daughter, some helpful hobos, a DMV worker with multiple tattoos and piercings, a snarky state worker, and a nosy cat-loving senior in a trailer park in Bucoda. He’s hindered once again by his favorite nemeses, the county coroner and an Olympia Police Officer with an axe to grind for everything except the chip on his shoulder.

3. Jobe’s Torment
Single Dad Private Detective Jobe Carson has a double dilemma: Dig into a cold case with a core of a corpse, and solve the murder of an emcee who stumbled on a gopher land scam involving local politicos, cult leaders, and just plain folks. All while his fractious family fuels his frustration. Jobe’s called to look into the origin of the human remains found at the bottom of a gas station pit that have been unearthed by a direct push drilling rig. Shortly thereafter he’s hired to dig to the bottom of the mysterious killing of a local charity emcee and auctioneer. Are the two cases related? And do they have something to do with pocket gophers? Jobe’s three children help him sort out the case—until his daughter Miranda disappears, that is. When Jobe thinks he’s traced her to a battered women’s shelter he gets tased by an over-zealous police officer. Wife and daughter now both missing, Jobe’s coroner lab tech lover, sick of taking a back seat to his issues, dumps him in an emotional hole. It’s not long before Jobe finds a new romantic interest, Anne—or is he just playing her along, since she’s a suspect in her emcee husband’s death? An Evergreen College Adjunct Professor offers a clue, and Jobe and Anne head to Hoquiam on Washington’s coast to track down a humdinger of hanky-panky.

4. Jobe’s Anguish
Private Detective Jobe Carson faces another roadblock in the cycle of life: Handling the challenge of eldercare as his demented dad is dumped on him just as he’s hired to find out who is slaying local cyclists. Will he be able to derail the Cycle Psycho and keep his own sanity while managing his frustrating father? Jobe is minding his own business when his tired brother dumps off their dad, whose senile dementia has become too much for the brother to deal with. A former single dad who managed to be a private detective at the same time, Jobe thinks taking care of a demented dad is practicable. It isn’t. Jobe finds out how impracticable when he gets hired by an insurance company to investigate the Cycle Psycho case. As the body count of slain cyclists grows and the company gets tired of forking over big bucks, Jobe needs to find out who is doing the killing and how he or she is doing it. Bad enough when innocent bicyclers get pounded off the side of the road, worse when investigators can’t even figure out the weapon being used to do it. And roundabouts part of the process? College professors, firefighters, coroners, elder caregivers, FBI lab investigators, transgender hobos, and a Chamber of Commerce president. Dementia and the cycle of life. Cyclists and the demented person killing them. The riddle of who’s ridding the roads of riders, the mystery of the method of murdering, and the enigma of the evaporating mind. The deteriorating death of consciousness and just plain death. And how laughter and love prevail.

5. Jobe’s Vexation
Private Detective Jobe Carson is out to catch a cat killer and collect the reward. Then his demented dad is kidnapped, possibly by the same wacko that’s been slaughtering felines. Join Jobe and his smart-cracking sidekick Anne as they search from the Pacific Northwest to the tectonic cracks of Iceland to track down the kitty carver—and possibly find Jobe’s father before he gets carved up too. Is it a cult leader? Or just a craven crazy that can’t stand either cutesy cats or cranky codgers?

6. Jobe’s Ordeal
Private Detective Jobe Carson and his dementia impaired dad are at it again, this time trying to thwart a couple of D&D Ren Faire techno-nerds who are harvesting stem cells from vulnerable and involuntary donors. Lucky for Jobe, his son Kiah is prepared to help, even if he has to climb a mountain to do so.

7. Jobe’s Affliction
Private Detective Jobe Carson, who once faced the trials of being a single parent of three teenagers and the tribulations of caretaking a father stricken with dementia, now has to face an even more difficult challenge—solving the case of a vicious killer who is hiding under cover of the locked down world of the coronavirus and using Zoom meetings to line up victims.

8. Jobe’s Fiasco
Private Detective Jobe Carson finds himself in a shocking situation. Someone is electrocuting his former crew members from the cable access TV show he produced in the mid-nineties. Literally a blast from the past. Coming out of his long-haul Covid affliction, Jobe needs to conduct himself well, avoid resistance, and somehow find the energy to dig deep into his personal history and expose some uncomfortable truths. Truths about not just friends, but family.

9. Jobe’s Betrayal
Private Detective Jobe Carson is on a marathon quest to find the answer to a question he hoped would never be asked: Who is the father of his daughter Miranda? It’s a journey as painful as any he has ever encountered, including the grueling ten-hour ultra-run he did with Miranda’s mother across Washington State’s Olympic Mountains. Fraught relationships with faithless family members go head-to-head with hair-raising confrontations with rocks, roots, and ruts. The emotional turmoil has Jobe running for the hills. A classic conundrum of Nurture vs Nature. And DNA may be the only thing preventing Jobe from DNF-ing.
