Overview: Robert Germaux and his wife, Cynthia, live outside of Pittsburgh. After three decades as a high school English teacher, and now a good many years into retirement, Bob is beginning to have serious doubts about his lifelong dream of pitching for the Pirates. Leaving the LAW is the fourth Jeremy Barnes mystery Bob has published (the others are Small Bytes, Hard Court and In the Eye). He’s also written two novels (Small Talk and One by One) about Pittsburgh police detective Daniel Hayes. Outside the mystery genre, Bob has authored The Backup Husband (a romance with a twist) and Love Stories, a semi-biographical novel based in part on the six weeks Cynthia spent in Europe prior to her senior year in high school.

1. Small Bytes
Terry Pendleton, a young Pittsburgh lawyer, was killed in what the police said was a mugging gone bad, but Rachel Pendleton doesn’t buy that explanation. She hires private detective Jeremy Barnes to look into her husband’s death. At first, Jeremy (JB to his friends) is inclined to believe the police report, but his investigation quickly uncovers holes in that report, not to mention a local thug who suddenly appears to warn JB to drop the case. Soon JB finds himself following a twisted trail of clues that eventually leads him to a violent confrontation with Terry’s killer.
2. Leaving the LAW
Early in his teaching career, one of Jeremy Barnes’ students was a skinny little kid named Larretta Warren. Now, more than fifteen years later, Jeremy (JB to his friends) is a Pittsburgh private detective, and Larretta reappears in his life, this time with a request: she wants Jeremy to get her son, Anthony, out of a gang. Reluctantly, Jeremy agrees to look into the situation and almost immediately runs into one problem after another, starting with a riot at Anthony’s school the day JB is there to meet him. Then, when Jeremy talks to Assan Witherspoon, an ex-gang member turned community activist, Assan surprises Jeremy by suggesting that it might not be a good idea for Anthony to leave the gang, a message very forcefully repeated by T-Man, the gang’s leader, who warns JB to “stay away from Anthony, ‘less you wanna get chalked.”
Aided at times by his childhood friend Dennis Wilcox (now a city police detective), Jeremy persists in his efforts to help Anthony. When Larretta played on the girls basketball team that Jeremy coached, she never gave up, and he’s not about to give up on her son now. As Leaving the LAW, unfolds, there are several surprises and plot twists, culminating in a dramatic confrontation that neither JB nor the reader could have predicted.
