Overview: James Galinski is a typical 19-year-old freshman from Greensboro, North Carolina. This despite his insomnia-driven fantasies, and suffering through what could be best described as a quarter-life crisis. James dreams of a better place; a paradise known as Navoeth. This world contains the best and worst parts of James’ twisted personality. One is a shape-shifting force known as The Shadow. The other is the literal girl of is dreams, Von, the raven-haired girl. He believes she is real, but no one else does. Least of all his dad, a grieving widower consumed by his professional responsibilities. In his father’s constant absence, James is forced to care for Hal, his infant brother.
James story is further complicated by the arrival of Dale, a physically and mentally scarred best friend. Dale takes James under his wing, showing that the pain of the past can easily be covered up through chemical co-dependency. This is made all the easier with a cocktail of antidepressants prescribed by James’ alluring middle-aged therapist, Dr Luanne Shaw. To get better, James believes he must deny the existence of Navoeth, as well as Von. His denial is short-lived after James little brother goes missing, The Shadow having taken him away. In a panicked state, James seeks out the only one who might believe his story, Dale. In a strange twist of fate, a necessary accident sets James on his path to spiritual awakening.
He wakes up in Navoeth, his mind reborn while his broken body lies in a hospital bed. Here he falls deeply for Von, but also discovers that the entire world he created is slowly being destroyed. He alone must face The Shadow, and discover his true purpose. It is here he confronts his ghosts of his past, including the truth about is mother’s death, and the reason for Hal’s disappearance. He must decide to stay on dreaming, or return to the real world. This then begs the question. If his dream world dies, does the girl he loves die with it? At the end of it all, James must learn the toughest lesson of all. Though we are all given the tools to succeed, it is up to the individual to assemble a world worth living in.
