Overview: Jack Wright was the hero of a popular series of Victorian science fiction dime novels and story papers written by Luis Senarens, the so-called "American Jules Verne." A few stories are also credited to Francis W. Doughty. Jack appeared in original stories from in 1891 to 1896 for a total of 121 stories. Luis Philip Senarens (1863-1939) who wrote under the pseudonyms Police Captain Howard and Noname, was an American dime novel writer specializing in science fiction, once called "the American Jules Verne." He grew up in a Cuban-American family in Brooklyn. He took over the Frank Reade adventure story series around 1882, introducing Frank Reade, Jr. as the new main character, and adding elements such as electricity. They were highly successful, and by the 1890s he was asked by publisher Frank Tousey to write a similar series featuring Jack Wright, the Boy Inventor. Mike Ashley calls him "the first prolific writer of science fiction." He would eventually write more than 300 dime novels. In 1917 Senarens became the editor of the Tousey detective story periodical, Mystery Magazine. His works include: The Girl Detective (1882), The Mystery of One Night (1882), Young Vidocq (1882), Frank Reade, Jr. and His Steam Wonder (1884), Frank Reade, Jr. in the Clouds (1885), Across the Continent on Wings (1886), The Electric Man; or, Frank Reade, Jr. in Australia (1887) and Frank Reade, Jr. and His Electric Team (1888).
