Overview: Murder and mystery in Broadland with “Jack Fellows”. And, in case you’re wondering, Broadland is a real place: 117 square miles of extensive wetland on England’s east coast, known for its big skies, winding rivers, rippling reedbeds, village boatyards, abandoned windpumps … and broads. The Broads were peat diggings that, in the Middle Ages, flooded and formed small lakes. They’re joined by 120 miles of navigable rivers and, until the 20th century, were commercial waterways. Now they are now predominantly a place of leisure, busy in the summer with holidaymakers and boaters, but in winter, quiet, windswept, even desolate; a place where strange things can happen … and do.
Patrolling these meandering waters are Rangers, often men with a police backgrounds, as is Jack Fellows, the sleuth of these stories. A retired Scotland Yard detective, he loves his new role but still can’t shake off an inbuilt instinct to suss the suspicious and pursue the wrongdoer. His wife Audrey wishes he would leave investigation to others, but realises just as surely that he never will.
I hope you’ll join Jack in his launch as he patrols this unique area, watching over the waterways, enforcing the bye-laws … and, perhaps, solving a murder.
