1. Enter Second Murderer (1988)
The events that cause Detective Inspector Faro to re-open the sensational case of The Gruesome Convent Murders (for which one murderer has already been executed) led him into a bewildering labyrinth of passions, betrayal, and greed concealed behind the lace curtains and respectable exteriors of Edinburgh society.
2. Blood Line (1989)
This mystery set in 19th century Scotland concerns a series of crimes set off by the discovery of the remains of a dead child who might have been the real son born to Mary Queen of Scots (instead of the child who grew up to be King James VI of Scots and I of England). About 2/3 of it is charming Victorian light romantic mystery, but the last part turns much grimmer. In the end, Inspector Faro is faced with a murderous conspiracy extending to the very highest level of British society
3. Deadly Beloved (1989)
Set in Victorian Edinburgh. Inspector Faro, of the Edinburgh Police, investigates the disappearance of a police surgeon’s wife. His discreeet and diplomatic investigations are suddently alerted by the appearance of a woman’s fur cloak, torn and bloodstained, beside a railway line. No body is found, but as revelations regarding the missing woman’s home life become increasingly sinister and bizarre, Faro is convinced that she is dead. And who has better opportunity for disposing of the corpse of an unwanted wife than a police surgeon?.
4. Killing Cousins (1990)
During a visit to the island where his mother still lives, Inspector Faro learns that a family friend has died of arsenic poisoning, and his investigation leads him to suspect both his teenage sweetheart and members of his family.
5. A Quiet Death (1991)
Detective Inspector Jeremy Faro had no idea that a funeral, melancholy enough but entirely innocent of crime, would lead to a startling confession from his stepson and that a suicide from the unfinished Tey Bridge would open up a sinister trail of seemingly unconnected events.
6. To Kill a Queen (1992)
Faro’s long-awaited August holiday on Royal Deeside is interrupted as his reputation reaches Queen Victoria. Flattered, he is somewhat put out to discover from John Brown that he is commanded to track down whoever killed her two favourite spaniels. Soon however Faro has a killing of far greater magnitude to solve, a plot to commit the ultimate treason and assassinate the Queen at Balmoral Castle.
