50 years before Rich was born, the Swarm struck his planet from orbit and landed troops on the surface. The enemy was never able to capture the megalopolis, but it was the only success of the humans. The remnants of the enemy’s robotic units have taken refuge in the ruins of the industrial zone, which come close to the remains of the city, and are still making unexpected sorties from there.
True, the enemy itself is sometimes the object of the hunt. Squads of illegal prospectors raid the industrial zone, where they find high-tech artifacts that people have forgotten how to make.
Rich is a student at a boarding school for teenagers whose childhood was spent in the underground tiers of the destroyed megalopolis. Officially, the city government is believed to have taken it upon itself to educate former homeless children and preparing them for adult life on their own. In fact, these teenagers are being trained to become recruits for the Federal Army, which is constantly fighting on planets of the Federation, that have nearly disintegrated.
After graduating from boarding school, Rich has only two options: enlist in the Federal Army or become part of the criminal Syndicate, which has long been tightly merged with the official authorities.
And he probably would have chosen one of these paths, believing that there are no other options, if not for the event that completely changed his attitude to everything that was happening around him.
