To 19-year-old Les’ette, humans are a legend, a lie. They are dark fairytales about vicious creatures dwelling in the toxic forest outside Earth’s fortressed cities. Many of those poisonous regions she has watched from the Federation’s Orphan Train since she was a child.
But Les’ette can’t afford to care about mysteries, or well, anything else for that matter. All she wants is for her little pest to abandon the idea of becoming her sister, the palm-greaser to stop admitting his feelings for her and most of all, to age out and be free of her nightmare before someone purchases her at auction.
When a mad scientist takes an interest in her, the threat of being his next lab rat becomes a disturbing possibility. As she straddles the fragile line of Dr. Upton’s sanity, surviving the day is all she begins to want. With Dr. Upton employed by the government, Les’ette becomes entangled in the chaos stirring inside The Federation.
