She takes this perilous adventure with Tage: a young man close in age to Jilly who is living on his own until his father is released from prison for a crime he committed years ago in a desperate attempt to provide for his young son. Too bad Tage won’t agree to search for the money that was never recovered from the robbery. . . at least not until Cat Catella, the beautiful black woman who, with help from Jilly and Tage, flees an abusive relationship and finds a gentler love in Otto’s arms, ends up accused of murdering her ex. Jilly knows they can’t leave Cat in jail—especially since she also knows Otto is the one who pulled the trigger, even if he can’t remember committing the act in a moment of defense for Cat.
As Jilly finds herself drawn into the lives and conflicts of these people, she still cannot give up hope of meeting her biological mother and finally having a real family of her own, so she sets in motion her last chance to force her mother to acknowledge her. But as the lives of Otto, Cat, Gwen, Tage, and Jilly merge together, she begins to realize that if her real mother does show up, her appearance may not only destroy the new life Jilly has built with strangers, it may also prove once and for all that there is nobody on this earth who truly loves Jilly Sanders.
