Overview: It’s not that farming is inherently a poor occupation, it’s just that having to compete against the large corporate owned farms makes it nearly impossible for the small farm owner/operator to be really financially successful. Yes, one can make a decent acceptable living farming but it is most certainly not the high life. To a young man who comes from a family that sits at the lower end of the middle class, unfortunately the slot allotted to most small farm owner/operators, the concept of a college education and the resultant better and more lucrative career becomes a driving factor. Especially when the man is exceptionally bright and has absolutely no instinct or desire to follow in the footsteps of his farmer father. So it was with Lance Wilson.

As with most young gay people, growing up gay put Lance Wilson’s life in conflict most of the time. Everything he did, including how he dressed, how he walked, what he said and how he said it was controlled by the people around him, by the society of a small rural farming community in central Illinois. While Illinois is not considered to be part of the bible belt of the US, it certainly has it’s share of socially conservative evangelical Protestantism. They condemn both gays and those who hustle.

Lance had problems growing up and during his early years in school. But he fought hard to insure those troubles didn’t keep him from going to college and becoming a success. It wasn’t until he moved to the big city of Peoria, Illinois, to go to college that he finally began to feel like he had taken at least some control over his life and his future. While his college tuition was taken care of through an inheritance from thoughtful grandparents, his day to day living expenses were his own burden to carry. Since his parents couldn’t provide much financial help, it was all up to Lance. He managed to handle those financial burdens by learning how to hustle on the streets of Peoria. With the help of a fellow student, Bert, Lance discovered the advantages, at least financially speaking, of street hustling.

While there had been incidents that shook his belief in the lifestyle of a hustler, Lance continued to hustle on the streets of Peoria. During the summer between his first and second year of college, he was outed in a very public and dramatic fashion. That incident caused a very painful separation from his family. However, it was a gay bashing of someone he had been with and the murder of a close friend, who, like Lance, hustled for his money, that created huge conflicts in Lance’s mind. Conflicts that might even force Lance to relinquish his dream of a college education and a satisfying career. Without a good education and a good career, how could he possibly find a man who was willing to share his life? Will Lance find the man of his dreams or will he end up living a life of loneliness; without a mate, without his family? This is the story of Lance Wilson, the good as well as the bad.
