In the future, humanity will utilize bio-mechanical suits called Husks to engulf and replace the human body. Sarah – a junkie, a child prodigy and a cop – is part of a unit that pilots Husks for law enforcement. An incident at Arnold, the corporation that creates the Husks, leads the BMRI police force on a search for a new “brain hacker.” Sarah’s questioning of Arnold’s true motivations are overshadowed by her ever-growing addiction to her Husk and her distain for her own body and life.

Husk is a collaboration between Marvel and French comic publisher Soleil, in that Marvel is importing it (and a few other titles already made by Soleil) to the States. The book is listed as a “Marvel Limited Series” and does not take place in any Marvel universe, so don’t expect any Siege or Second Coming discussions in the background.

A special police officer inside of a Husk stumbles onto an individual who is unresponsive to the officers demands at stopping. This individual is inside a heavily armored Husk, a brand new body that allows a human to reach a new stage of evolution through a marriage of technology and organics. Unresponsive to the demands the police officer attacks and this is where Husk begins. A sic-fi world not very far away from our own where humans are still looking for some sort of extreme and where the proclaimed next evolutionary stage is very much in the making according to many, the very least include Arnold, the company supplying and creating Husks to the world as well as our protagonist Sarah.

In Sarah we find someone who is slightly insecure, in love with her co-pilot, and completely addicted to living life inside of her Husk. A Husk is not something easily com by though, she may not be a great police officer, but she in unparalleled when it comes to working in a Husk. But something is wrong, something in her mind doesn’t feel correct and there are many times she feels like she is being programmed to act a certain way. While this could prove to be true, she could also just be lonely and talking nonsense.

Husk gives us a world that many people may have seen before through various other writings, but it also makes this world it’s own. The attention to detail in the artwork (which is astounding to say the least) and the amount of character development is very impressive and gives a good sense of just where things are going to go leaving just enough foreshadowing around to make things intriguing but not immediately obvious. A great read that includes organic Mechs, toys that react to their surroundings and a talking Pig police officer, Husk makes for a memorable read.
