Hengist – People of the Horse series by Jack Gray
Requirements: As so often happens with these things, Archer was born while I was in the middle of writing another book. Events were conspiring to ensure I wrote this story, beginning with a trip to Warwick Castle where I stood enthralled with my friend and our kids while the Warwick Bowman talked us through the history of the long bow. He treated us to the ultimate demonstration, firing 100 arrows in rapid succession through a loop of rope, approximately the size of a human head. The warrior within me awoke – I was hooked.

01. Archer: Archer – one boy’s fight against adversity to find friendship, romance and the generosity to love his enemy.
Archer is the sort of boy that things happen to. Orphaned as a baby, he has certain qualities that make him very different to all the other kids. He doesn’t understand why he’s so much stronger and faster than other boys his age, why a sword just feels right in his hand, or how he can fire an arrow at a target and it will hit the centre, even if his eyes are closed.
He does know that he has to fight his friend Finn in a joust and compete against his best friend Fletch to see who is the most worthy. Whoever wins the competition will become King of the May, rewarded with fame, honour and plenty of female adoration.
Edlyn has been a big thorn in Archer’s side for many years and he will go to any lengths to win, but his lack of respect for the natural order has dangerous consequences. Archer is the only one who can save him, but after the way Edlyn has treated him, does he really want to?

02. Rory: Stick his neck out to save the so-called friends who betrayed him? Would you?
Archer’s reward for being the most worthy student in his graduating class is to lose his home and all his friends.
Sent from his tranquil, medieval life to aggressive, modern-day England, Archer’s mission is to report back about cars, computers and even chocolate. The other foster boys try to break his spirit by threatening him with his own bow – they have no idea they are dealing with a trained warrior. He teaches them honour, integrity and archery; they teach him how to get in trouble with the authorities.
Forced to move foster homes, things go downhill as pink-haired Mandy takes a fancy to his athletic body – his warrior defences are useless against her obnoxious wiles. She seems determined to drag Archer into the shady world of Stiff and his gang of teenage shoplifters.

03. Reagan: Decode the mysteries of white horses, crop circles and ley-lines to save his people? No pressure, then.
Reagan knows he’s nothing special; his mother reminds him often enough. Being shy and scruffy makes him inadequate in her eyes; winning the Garlanding and scoring 100% on his graduation tests are of little consequence. But his mathematical skills and ability to sense ley-lines are essential to the council for determining the cause of dangerous accidents in the village. Aided by his spirit guide and an irreverent trainer, Kalen, sparks fly when they meet Reeve, daughter of the leading authority on white horses.
The quest becomes a race against time as an epidemic claims numerous casualties. Can Reagan find the missing pieces of the puzzle before his perilous gift destroys him, as it destroyed so many chosen children?

04. Slater: The boy who outwits the wicked shaman to uncover the secrets of the stone temples.
Slater is the son of Mason, but he will never be a chip off the old block. Although his father is responsible for Aveburgh henge, Slater is more interested in learning about the ceremonies held amongst the stones.
Torn from a solstice celebration into a real-life nightmare, Slater’s talent for reading ley lines upsets dark forces.
Ancient magic pulls him back in time to reveal his connection to primeval secrets. There, he is teased by formidable priestesses who teach him the power of earth energies. Slater’s ability to solve problems under pressure is his strongest weapon against terrifying shamen who want only one thing from him – his death.
Only Slater knows the prehistoric temples are not built correctly, but what will happen if he interferes in the past?

05. Geraint: Purest Evil threatens Renegates and Townies alike. Can Geraint unite these warring factions in time to save Oxford?

Geraint’s life is Hell. He despises his father’s scavenging lifestyle and loathes the brutal training designed to make him worthy of being the next Renegate leader. During the combat trial, he bests a nasty bully who seeks revenge.
Light brightens Geraint’s darkness when he meets Siany, a Townie girl who teaches him how to read, write and believe in himself. This meeting of souls awakens strong powers in both of them, but the bully severs their connection, plunging him back to that dark place.
Prophetic dreams help Geraint to save Siany’s family from cut-throat bandits, who go on to besiege Oxford, a stepping stone to ruling the land. Geraint and Siany’s role in uniting their peoples against this evil is crucial, working alongside the legendary Archer. When the warrior’s nemesis joins the murderous band, death and destruction seem inevitable.
