Harrogate Crime aka DCI Cyril Bennett Series (#2, 9-13) by Malcolm Hollingdrake
Requirements: ePUB reader, 1.80mb
Overview: Hollingdrake’s novel cleverly fuses some well-researched – and entirely fascinating – historical references and with equally-well represented modern-policing procedures, producing a tightly plotted and considered read. – DCI Bennett is allowed to be a real person, rather than a box-ticking mannequin displaying all the usual detective characteristics. He has his foibles, his flaws, his prejudices and his ethics. I liked the lead character a lot, and sense much more development to come in future books.
Genre: Fiction > Mystery/Thriller

2. Hell’s Gate (2016)
A disused railway tunnel where, cruel and sinister deeds are executed.
A policeman on a mission.
A killer who will stop at nothing.
The formidable DCI Cyril Bennett and DS David Owen of Harrogate Police find themselves embroiled in a series of bizarre events.
A domestic dog attack on a child soon leads to a more complex case – the macabre discovery of a jigsaw of featureless, indiscernible body parts amongst bin bags littering a quiet road on the outskirts of the town.
While under the leadership of a Chinese Mafioso, a team of Eastern Europeans spreads its tentacles into the sordid underworld of people trafficking, dog fighting, prostitution and murder.
Bennett quickly has his hands full investigating a gambling syndicate, the discovery of a mutilated corpse, the death of a prostitute and the case of a badly beaten police officer.
As Bennett and his team are stretched to capacity cracks begin to appear.
Is there a link between these cases and can they catch a twisted killer before he strikes again?

9. Threadbare (2020)
The team is seeing changes. Cyril is away and for the second time, Owen finds himself in charge of the investigation. An elderly gentleman dies of a snake bite and unfortunately his carer is also attacked. The second murder is a shooting, an unusual weapon being used, again an elderly victim.
A photograph of four friends celebrating a win at the Great St Wilfred’s Stakes at Ripon races in 1986 seems to be significant, but the relevance, at first, is lost in the investigation.
Another victim , one of the friends in the photograph, is found dead in his home. Only one of the friends remains alive and Owen and his team fight against time to prevent his murder.
The investigation is hampered by two siblings, the Bostock brothers, who have a history of rivalry and hatred; one of them is in the Ripon races photograph.
DS April Richmond’s biblical knowledge proves critical in solving the crime. The snake, Lilith, conjures the Garden of Eden. Two more fatalities occur before the crimes are solved and the motive is revealed.

10. Fragments (2021)
FRAGMENTS – If you spend too much time remembering the past you are likely to lose your way in the present!
DCI Cyril Bennett is where he belongs, at the helm in a case involving multiple murders. The sudden deaths of the elderly victims are seemingly from natural causes with no suspicious circumstances. All are male and belong to a private social media group representing various areas of the educational establishment, developed after various meetings and reunions. The team battles to solve the crime before more murders ensue.
Meanwhile, Owen, newly promoted to Inspector, is working on a drug related case. What initially seemed to be a straighforward investigation becomes a complex movement of drugs by a county line gang. When an adolescent goes missing , Owen must act swiftly.

11. Uncertainty of Reason (2021)
A murderer is loose on the streets of Harrogate. His initial purpose is to inflict damage, not to cause death. Repercussions of a serious road accident and an abusive childhood haunt the perpetrator. The balance of his mind is disturbed and he experiences moments of intense, irrational anger which override his sanity. The colour red seems to trigger his psychosis. The case is a disturbing one for DCI Bennett and his team. The face of the victims are battered most brutally, as if to remove their very identity. The investigation proves painstaking and the web extends to include drugs, bailiffs, a lock-up garage and, pertinently, who had access to the keys.

12. The Damascene Moment (2022)
DCI Bennett and his team are involved in a missing persons investigation. Basking in his new role as a father, DI David Owen finds the case particularly distressing.
The case is a perplexing one and the team is faced by a web of uncertainty and confusion. The battle is on between light and darkness, the shadows and the Shadowlands. The more the investigation proceeds, the more we are made aware that the victim’s life is not as innocent as first perceived: drug use and infidelity rear their ugly heads.
The team is up against a deranged perpetrator who is well-organised, cunning and enigmatic. As the evidence accumulates, no breakthrough occurs and when a second female is reported missing, the pressure is on. Both Owen and April feel “the copper’s nag” and as time passes, they believe something sinister is involved.
A tragic road accident occurs as a strange form of serendipity. Finally, after some painstaking police work, the case is bought to a close.

13. Trapped Secrets (2023)
Having attended a Murder Mystery evening at Goldsborough Hall, DCI Cyril Bennett returns to the station to find his team involved in a missing persons’ investigation. He is initially perturbed as this area of crime would not normally fall within their jurisdiction.
In total, five people have disappeared with no pattern to age nor gender. Bennett is exasperated by the actions of a vigilante group bent on confronting and exposing paedophiles.
A body is found on a popular walkers’ route and the case becomes a murder investigation. Frustration creeps in as the team concentrates on locating the remaining missing persons. Another body is discovered, seemingly a case of suicide.
The detectives concentrate on trying to filter muddied waters as they discover existing relationships between the missing. The team engage in a painstaking search in order to solve the case. Hard facts are required, not supposition as the motives of revenge and retribution surface.
