1. Penitence
In a small poultry farm located in Delaney, Georgia an antigenic shift causes the H7N9 virus – also known as the deadly bird flu virus – to jump species. The contagion burns through everything in its path despite the federal government’s ham-handed efforts to mask the mutated virus’ true nature. Its unprecedented mortality rates soon paralyze the nation – paving the way for martial law to be established across the country.
Over a thousand miles away at a maximum security penitentiary south of Tucson, Arizona, Inmate Teddy Sanders’ world of structure and routine crumbles to dust, as the virus starts spreading within the confines of the prison’s walls. As circumstances force Teddy to step out of his comfort zone and form precarious new alliances, will he be able to adapt and survive or will he succumb to the inherent dangers of the new world?
2. Absolution
A nation in ruins. A ruthless government determined to hold onto power. One man’s insurmountable guilt and a promise that is almost impossible to realize. After facing insufferable losses in the Tucson quarantine center, Teddy Sanders finds himself in a frighteningly familiar situation.
In the wake of the H7N9 pandemic, the remnants of the U.S. government, sheltered deep underground at the Cheyenne Mountain Complex, has enacted Presidential Directive 40—Continuity of Operations Protocol—and declared a state of national emergency. Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency has combined all remaining local, state, and federal agencies to institute the nation’s de facto militarized police force. FEMA, in an effort to curtail lawlessness and reestablish essential government functions, has created safe zones and civilian work camps throughout the country in order to assist with recovery operations. Acting under the scope of martial law, FEMA’s forces use fearmongering and brutality to keep the dispirited civil population in line.
Upon arriving at one of the work camps, Teddy Sanders takes in the razor wire, sentry towers, and chain-link fences: he’s back in the same hellhole that he has known for most of his adult life. His travel companion, Ein, a young man who has never experienced Teddy’s world of confinement, finds himself entering dangerous territory, where one wrong move could cost him his life. No longer the kind of man who looks the other way when someone is in trouble, Teddy vows to escape and take Ein with him to freedom. Teddy’s plans unravel, and the stakes are raised, after he discovers that the camp harbors some dark secrets.
As winter approaches and the camp’s food supplies dwindle due to command’s shortsightedness, FEMA’s control over the community becomes tenuous: tempers flare not only between the officers and the detainees but between the upper echelons of the camp’s command hierarchy. An untrained—and unrestrained— security force exacerbates the situation, forcing the camp’s administration to contend with threats from the inside as well as the outside. Will Teddy be able to find his friend—or will he be too late? And if he isn’t too late, how will he manage to get himself and Ein out of a prison camp that may be about to explode into chaos?
3. Pilgrimage
A mutating virus. A perilous journey. A dark secret that threatens to shatter an already tenuous bond.
After escaping one of FEMA’s civilian labor camps, Teddy Sanders and Ein Becker travel across a hostile, fractured, post-pandemic United States in search of sanctuary.
In the wake of a flu pandemic that has wiped out 90% of the population and the ensuing failure of the government’s quarantine centers due to both asymptomatic carriers and a rapidly mutating virus, the United States has become a vast wasteland in which rebel factions and the remnants of the federal government fight over what remains of the country. The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s fortified cities, called safe zones, promise safety and purpose to any healthy survivors who are willing to forgo personal liberty in exchange for peace. Outside of the walls of these safe zones, anarchy reigns as militias and independent settlements struggle daily in a desperate search for supplies.
Stuck in a state that neither of them knows anything about, Teddy Sanders and his unwitting travel companion, Ein Becker, set out to find a place to call home. Together, they embark on a journey that takes them across the country and find themselves tested in ways they never expected, as they contend with both hostile survivors and a military that continues to pursue them at any cost.
Matters become even more complicated when Teddy realizes that Ein harbors some dark secrets of his own. As the government closes in on them and hidden truths are brought to light, will the two men be able to come together in order to achieve their goal, or will everything unravel once and for all?
