Guinness World Records 1971 by Norris and Ross McWhirter (10th Edition)

Overview: Foreword: When we first brought out this book some fifteen years ago, we did so in the hope of providing a means for the peaceful settling of arguments about extremes and record performances in this recordbreaking world in which we live. We realize, of course, that much joy lies in the argument, but how exasperating it can be if there is no final means of finding the answer. In the event, we found that the interest aroused by this book has exceeded our wildest expectations. This is the tenth edition in the United States and translations into Czech, Danish, Dutch, French, Finnish, German, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Spanish and Swedish have shown the universality of its appeal. In total we have had produced more than 5,000,000 copies. Whether the discussion concerns the smallest fish ever caught, the most expensive wine, the greatest weight lifted by a man or a woman, the world’s longest horse race, or an old bone of contention the longest river in the world, I can but quote the words used in introducing the first edition. "How much heat these innocent questions can raise: Guinness, in producing this book, hopes that it may assist in resolving many such disputes, and may we hope turn heat into light."
