Darex spent his youth protecting his people by fighting in more wars than he can count. He’s retired to Asemsa, the planet where mature Majaki fighters and some humans go to live the rest of their lives in peace.
He’s arrived just in time to participate in the Choosing Ceremony where he can select a mate. They will live together for ten rotations to see if they are compatible before deciding to bond their lives together and create offspring.
The rules of the Choosing state that the Majaki male must spend the first five days obeying every command of his Chosen. Every. Single. Command. And then it will be his turn to command.
The beautiful female he has selected is human with flame-red hair and a blatant disinterest in him. She’s a researcher studying the ways of his people. She might be participating in the Choosing for research only, but he will convince her their bond is real. His heart and body know she is the one and he won’t give up.
Even when she commands him to wear red garments and a pale beard made of flower silks to cheer up the human children in the colony. Even when she demands he stuff cloth beneath his shirt to appear round and out of shape, unheard of for a warrior!
And when she asks him to use his terrifying warrior’s voice to make music… he almost throws her in the lake and calls the whole thing off.
He will say, “ho, ho, ho” and hand out gifts to the humans if it makes her happy.
