Growing Up Underground by Jane Alpert
Requirements: PDF Reader, 1.5 MB
Overview: Jane Alpert was arrested in late 1969 and charged with bombing seven government and corporate buildings in New York City because of their association with the Vietnam War. Six months later, after pleading guilty to a charge of conspiracy, she jumped bail and became a fugitive, joining the radical underground. In 1974, she renounced the left, declared a new commitment to feminism and surrendered to the government to begin a prison sentence. She began making notes for this biography while she was in prison and worked on it for four years after her release. The result is a straightforward, lucid and deeply felt account of what happened and also a vivid recapturing of the sixties and seventies.
