First contact with extra-terrestrials didn’t play out as we expected.
They appeared out in the gas giants building structures and harvesting planets. Trapped by a year of flight time, we were limited to radio communications that went ignored. They made a move for Mars, but even then six months of flight kept them at bay. Until they started mining the moon.
Faced with a war of extinction over a border dispute, we discovered our weapons and our technology were no match for several hundred years of technological advancement. Survival decided we would send our special forces into the dark unknown of extensive genetic reconstruction. We went off the edge of the map of the human genome and here there be monsters.
We call them Grendels.
