Overview: A riveting post-apocalyptic, queer, science-fiction adventure set on the waves of a drowned Earth.
Plunge into a waterlogged Mad Max-esque aquatic wasteland that glimmers with the high-concept science-fiction twists of Stargate Atlantis. Cling on tight for high-stakes danger and soothing comfort that will appeal to whump and hurt/comfort M/M romance aficionados.
In the future, Earth has been swallowed up by rising seas. Water has devoured all land, leaving generations of survivors with no choice but to live their lives adrift. Siblings Lena (an overprotective, ultra-competent older sister who is Tired) and Kai (a physically fragile but brilliant star navigator), along with Kai’s lifelong friend and budding sweetheart Tavi (sweet, strong, loves to cook up horrifying ration concoctions), cling to life aboard a battered catamaran. Navigating heaving swells in between the skeletal ruins of submerged skyscrapers, they scavenge supplies while facing off the threats of starvation, pirates, and raging ocean-spanning storms.
When Lena discovers a cryptic map promising the existence of a island miraculously untouched by rising tides, fantastical hopes are sparked. But as their perilous journey ensues, Lena grows even more fiercely protective of the frail Kai, haunted by witnessing his near-fatal birth in a raging storm eighteen long years ago. Tavi’s selfless acts of putting himself in danger to safeguard both Lena and Kai only deepen the bonds of their makeshift family.
The truth they eventually uncover, however, is more staggering than anyone imagined – their “island” is revealed to be the last of several gigantic spacecraft built to evacuate humanity before the planet’s drowning. As the great engines roar back to life, Lena, Tavi, and Kai find themselves aboard humanity’s greatest liferaft, sailing into an even more uncertain future among the stars.
An immersive young adult science-fiction tale of found family, action-adventure, high-stakes survival, and a sweet M/M romance on the open sea…and beyond.
