Book #1 – The Inheritance
Ray Thorpe, a criminal defence lawyer, is engaged to represent Conrad Hardy, a militant eco-activist accused of arson at a GM crops farm. Thorpe is used to dealing with uncompromising idealists; his father, a staunch Marxist, was one of them.
The case seems straightforward until a succession of bombings at a nearby pharma corporation, with material evidence linking them to Hardy, leads to the escalation of charges to murder and eco-terrorism.
The case mounted against Hardy appears irrefutable and Thorpe’s only witness is found dead.
To complicate matters further, one of the bombing victims was the wife of Thorpe’s business partner and a close friend of his Chinese wife Lou, a frail and emotionally unstable woman.
Having angered a high-ranking official of the Communist Party of China, Lou fled her homeland and now lives in constant fear for her life. The last thing Ray and Lou want is exposure to public scrutiny.
As Thorpe’s own investigation begins to cut through the smokescreen of misdirection contrived by the killer, he uncovers evidence pointing towards someone he would least suspect.
He is compelled to confront the killer, but that may lead to him compromising his career and his wife’s safety.
Book #2 – Bloodlines
Having left his previous law firm without severance pay, Ray Thorpe, a criminal defence lawyer, sets up on his own. Desperate for work, he takes on a child custody case.
He is acting for Tom and Candice Tait, the adoptive parents of three-year-old Noah – who has been abducted by his surrogate mother Sonya, a young Ukrainian woman working in the UK as an au pair.
The adoption agreement drafted by a shady surrogacy agency is unenforceable against Sonya. The court awards her Noah’s custody. Before the Taits can contest that verdict, Tom, Sonya and Noah all disappear.
The police refuse to investigate. Tom and Sonya, being Noah’s biological parents, were free to leave and take their child with them, and spousal abandonment isn’t a crime.
Questions remain unanswered. Thorpe and his researcher, Doug Walsh, are hired to find the missing family. Their inquiries take them to Ukraine and into the underworld trade in surrogacy.
Back in the UK, the informal missing persons inquiry becomes a double murder investigation. Noah’s whereabouts remain a mystery but after weeks of police inertia the trail has already gone cold.
But family matters.
Book #3 – Complicity
Ray Thorpe, a criminal defence lawyer, acts for Mahmud Farooqi, a pharmacist from Wolverhampton who stands accused of brutally murdering a young man in Bath.
Farooqi is an enigma. He refuses to plea and his connection to the victim remains a mystery, but the evidence against him is overwhelming. He is found guilty and sentenced to life.
But the case is re-opened when another young man is killed in identical circumstances. Kevin Marshall, a middle-aged occupational therapist, walks into the police station and confesses to both murders without revealing his motive.
Thorpe appeals Farooqi’s conviction but doubts his innocence.
While both Farooqi and Marshall are out on bail, a third man is murdered.
With the help of his researcher, Doug Walsh, Thorpe establishes a link between the three victims – they were all employees of Generation MM, a computer games design studio.
And so is Kevin Marshall’s son, Bobby, himself a victim of a violent attack.
But why would Marshall want to kill any of them? And how does Farooqi fit into it?
As Thorpe wrestles with this baffling case, his daughter Robyn travels to Australia with a group of friends.
She is abducted on arrival.
The past has finally caught up with Ray and his Chinese wife Lou who is a wanted woman in China.
She is the only person who can save their daughter, but at what cost?
As Thorpe uncovers the gruesome motive for the three murders, the killer pursues his last victim and another young man is left fighting for his life.
