COLOURS OF THE SOUTH (#1) The Mayor of a sleepy French village is found dead, shot through the head the morning after Bastille Day celebrations. An arrest is soon made and St Rémy breathes a sigh of relief. Or at least it does until a second murder is committed, seemingly unconnected to the first. But have they got the wrong man? Convinced that a terrible miscarriage of justice is about to be committed, avid crime fiction fan and would-be amateur sleuth Bridget Honeyman relishes the opportunity to get involved in the real-life mystery unfolding on her doorstep.
As Bridget sets out to get justice for the man she believes has been wrongly accused, her brother Gil struggles to understand what drives his sister to help a complete stranger. He’s worried for her safety too. Who wouldn’t, with a potential serial killer on the loose? Torn between supporting Bridget in her quest for the truth and keeping her from danger, Gil too gets caught up in the frantic race to prevent the killer from claiming yet another victim. With two people already dead and a third life in danger, will the secrets of St Rémy be revealed in time?
In her riveting mystery thriller, Leah Hope introduces us to a delightful new amateur sleuth in the unlikely form of fifty-something former pastry chef Bridget Honeyman. Colours of the South cleverly combines a dark murder mystery, which, in the best tradition of crime fiction has plenty of clues and red herrings, with some genuinely warm and lighthearted moments. Set against the backdrop of a charming French village and with the intrepid Bridget providing some (often unintentional) humour, it has the feel-good factor too.
Shadows of the past (#2) Frederick Honeyman, husband, father and respectable bank manager was the victim of a fatal hit and run accident on Christmas Eve 1984. It happened in Fareham Place, a little street on the far side of town, nowhere near his regular route home. What was he doing there? Where was he going? Tormented by all sorts of wild theories, none of which were remotely credible to anyone who knew him, his family came to accept they would never know the truth. Until now.
As Bridget Honeyman is sorting through Frederick’s old books, a letter falls from between two of the pages. Picking it up and expecting to see her father’s spidery writing, Bridget is instead horrified to find herself reading a love letter. Signed “yours ever, Eleanor”, she invites Frederick to a clandestine meeting in Fareham Place, on the very day that he died. But what angers Bridget almost as much as discovering that there was another woman in her father’s life is to read that a complete stranger addresses him as “darling Freddie”. How dare she! Not even her mother called him that. Fred maybe, but Freddie? Never.
After much soul-searching, Bridget and her brother Gil set out to find the mysterious Eleanor in the hope that they will at last learn the truth behind what happened to their father on that fateful day. But are they really ready to hear it?
In this eagerly awaited second book in the Gil and Bridget Honeyman mystery series, follow the intrepid pair of amateur sleuths as their quest takes them on an emotional rollercoaster ride the length and breadth of the country.
Sins of the fathers (#3) Whilst sitting in her friends’ car on their driveway one Sunday morning, Maggie Thomas is shot at point blank range. The police conclude that since only a handful of people even knew that she would be in the UK that day, let alone sitting in Gil and Bridget Honeyman’s driveway, it must be Bridget who was the intended target. But as Bridget has no more idea than Maggie as to why this should be, she begins to wonder if events in her own recent past could in fact hold the key. Just as she believes she’s worked out the identity of the gunman, and more importantly, what their motives might be, a second attack takes everyone’s breath away. But who will be the target this time?
In this, the third in the Gil and Bridget Honeyman mystery series, and their darkest adventure so far, the intrepid pair of amateur sleuths are for once forced to act as helpless bystanders as events threaten to spiral out of control. It’s not all doom and gloom however as an unexpected romance catches Gil unawares. But could this spell the end for the siblings’ crime-solving partnership?
Parting of the waves (#4) A woman is missing from a Calais to Dover cross-channel ferry, presumed drowned. The police are ready to wrap things up as a tragic accident, that is until former pastry chef and amateur sleuth Bridget Honeyman arrives on the scene to put an enormous spanner in the works.
In her holiday cottage in France, Bridget reads a newspaper article about the incident and her eyes nearly pop out of her head when she studies the accompanying photo of the missing woman and her husband. She’s horrified to see it’s the couple that she and her brother Gil briefly chatted to on their way to France just a few days ago. Except it’s not the same woman, Bridget tells Gil. It’s a good likeness but it’s definitely not her. Gil has come to trust his sister’s powers of observation and if she says it’s not her, well that’s good enough for him.
On their return to the UK, Gil and Bridget bump into an old ally in the form of newly promoted Detective Chief Inspector Mark Addison who is heading the investigation into the missing woman. Like Bridget, he too smells a rat but his boss would rather he spent his time and valuable police resources solving a mini crime wave that’s hit the area. Keen to get to the bottom of what really happened on the ferry whilst not busting the budget, Mark enlists Gil and Bridget’s help. True to form whenever the pair are involved, events take one dramatic turn after another as the mystery deepens and leads them into a web of lies and deceit.
If you’re a fan of Gil and Bridget then you’ll love their latest adventure which has all your favourite ingredients, plus a surprising development for Bridget thrown in for good measure!
