Overview: Nominated for Best Book: Fiction for 2017 by the Dog Writers Association of America!

Ghosts of Iwo Jima is about battles, ghosts, and two very special dogs. The battle stories include historically accurate and realistic depictions of combat on Iwo Jima and in Vietnam and Afghanistan. The ghost stories are believable because of their setting on Iwo Jima, a tiny speck in the Pacific Ocean where twenty-six thousand young men died in thirty-six days in 1945. At its heart, though, Ghosts of Iwo Jima is a dog story.

Gunny, a golden retriever search-and-rescue dog, is the main character. He and his handler, Sam, join a team of volunteers who travel to Iwo Jima to find the remains of five Marines missing for over seventy years. Gunny is joined by Luke, a black lab retired military working dog. Luke’s job is to protect the rest of the team by sweeping the search area for unexploded ordnance.

Shortly after beginning their search, the team realizes that not all of the dead on Iwo Jima are content to rest in peace. Gunny and Luke are the first to become aware of a strange presence, a dream spirit who seems to want to help them in their search. Later, as they get closer to solving the mystery of what happened to the missing Marines, another spirit appears, a Japanese demon determined to prevent the Americans from completing their mission. This demon focuses his murderous intent on Gunny and Luke must risk his life to save his friend.

Ghosts of Iwo Jima is the first novel in a series. The sequel, Ghosts of the Buffalo Wheel, is coming soon.
