Overview: The vast majority of serial killers are men – heterosexual men who inflict their lethal loathing of women onto sex workers, hitchhikers, college girls and other prospective female objects. However, there is a proportion of serial killers who vent their rage on their own gender, and some of the world’s most infamous serial killers have names which are instantly recognisable – John Wayne Gacy, Jeffrey Dahmer, Andrew Cunanan.
Although they represent only a small minority of serial killers (between 5-10%), gay serial killers seem even more prone to committing the most outrageous of brutalities – rape, torture, mutilation, necrophilia, cannibalism. More so even than their heterosexual counterparts. They also account for the most prolific of serial murderers, often taking dozens of victims in their nefarious careers. Just why this should be so is a subject of debate. It could be that self-hatred, or the perceived hatred of society, impels gay serial killers to inflict appalling acts of cruelty on their fellow man. They both love and hate men. The fact is not debatable – gay serial killers do tend to stick to type; they are men who kill men.
