Overview: Dr. Edward Elmer ‘Doc’ Smith, Ph. D., was one of the dominant forces in the science fiction of the thirties and forties and continued to write into the sixties. His work is clumsy and sometimes descends in the direction of kitsch, but it has its own flavor. The Lensman novels, first published in the 1930s, are considered the cornerstone of the space opera subgenre. Reed McColm narrates with precision, and with just enough of a swagger in his voice to call to mind the action heroes of an earlier era.
