Overview: There has always been something magical about our furry friends.
Back in the days of Aesop, storytellers used animals as teaching tools, a tradition continued through the ages and practiced by such diverse tale spinners as the Brothers Grimm and Beatrix Potter.
Potter has always been one of our favorites—whether for her parental warning tales of Peter Rabbit (whose disobedience results in his almost being caught by Mr. McGregor)—or Tom Kitten (whose disobedience almost results in him being made part of a roly poly pudding), and Brian Jacques whose denizens of Redwall bring new life to the archetype of the small hero.
In later years we grew partial to some of the more naturalistic and darker practitioners of the furry tale, such as Richard Adams’s Watership Down and Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh by Robert C. O’Brien or Whitley Strieber’s nuclear postholocaust Wolf of Shadows (though now that we think about it, maybe you can’t get grimmer than Potter’s tales—since both Peter and Tom are faced with the risk of being eaten . . . in the kitten’s case by a fat rat with the cute name of Samuel Whiskers).
—The furry friends fill their roles of protagonist and antagonist more than ably, and their furry nature adds a flavor to their pieces that can’t be filled by their balder human counterparts.
