French Quarter Mystery series by Eric Wilder (#1-#5)
Requirements: Epub reader, 1.70 Mb
Overview: Born on a Louisiana bayou, Halloween night, beneath a full moon, Eric Wilder grew up escaping snakes and alligators, and listening to his grandmothers’ tales of ghosts, voodoo, and political corruption. Author of nine novels, four cookbooks and many short stories, he now lives in Oklahoma, about a mile from historic Route 66, with his three dogs, one coyote, and cat, but not a single alligator.
Genre: Mystery, Paranormal
1. Big Easy
When someone begins killing New Orleans street people, it affects the City’s tourist trade just beginning to recover from Hurricane Katrina. More than just simple acts of murder, voodoo is involved, the killer likely an actual Vodoun deity. Homicide detective Tony Nicosia seeks the help of gumshoe, and Big Easy insider Wyatt Thomas. Wyatt enlists Mama Mulate, Tulane English professor, and actual voodoo mambo. Together, they try to unravel the strangest mystery to hit the venerable City since the era of Marie Laveau.
2. City of Spirits
Murder, lust, and a hundred-fifty year old voodoo curse. It’s Mardi Gras in the Big Easy, an escaped killer’s on the loose, and French Quarter detective Wyatt Thomas has his hands full. Get ready for a ride!
3. Primal Creatures
Just forty miles south of New Orleans, Goose Island may as well be in another world. Five feet out of the shallow waters of south Louisiana’s wetlands, the secluded island is home of the Tracists Monastery. It’s also a resort frequented by actors, screenwriters, and powerful people in the burgeoning Louisiana film industry. When a horrible death occurs on the island, a movie producer hires Wyatt Thomas, the French Quarter’s favorite sleuth, to find out whom or what killed the victim. Was it wild dogs or a rougarou (Cajun werewolf) as the local voodoo woman tells Wyatt? His own life threatened, he must first survive the killer (or possibly killers), and the deadly hurricane taking direct aim at the monastery.
4. Black Magic Woman
Burdened by spring floods, malaria and yellow fever, citizens of old New Orleans often turned to voodoo practitioners—African Rosalie, Sanite Dede, Bras Coupe—for protection. None were more powerful, or feared, than Doctor John and Marie Laveau. After paranormal private investigator Wyatt Thomas sees a ghost during a hospital visit, he tells his sometimes business partner voodoo mambo Mama Mulate about the encounter. She trances Wyatt and channels the ghost, soon learning a curse connects him and a long-dead French aristocrat. They are doomed to remain connected forever unless Wyatt can time-travel to old New Orleans and lift the curse before midnight on New Year’s Eve. Once there, his only hope is to seek the assistance of voodoo queen Marie Laveau. This metaphysical thriller mystery features ghosts, ghouls, curses, and duels to the death, along with the search for Louis Armstrong’s lost cornet.
5. River Road
A new client wants paranormal P.I. Wyatt Thomas to find his mother, Dr. Mary Taggert’s killer. The problem is the fifty-year-old murder isn’t just cold, it’s frozen solid.
Events happen fast when Wyatt accepts a large retainer from a new client wishing to keep his identity secret. Shortly after agreeing to find the person who killed the man’s mother, Wyatt’s client is himself murdered. The killers shoot Wyatt as he attempts to intervene. He awakens in a New Orleans’ hospital only to find they have yet to finish with him.
The mysterious men want him dead. He escapes and learns they’ve somehow managed to pin his client’s murder on him. But why? Determined to find out, he enlists the aid of Lucy Diamond. Lucy is a beautiful though cynical reporter in town to film a story on the same murder his client paid him to resolve. He marks her for death when they discuss the case. Though different in every possible way, they go on the run together.
Wyatt and Lucy soon learn more than a single person participated in the murder of Dr. Mary. Many more. The ensuing chase drags them through the gritty backside of New Orleans where everyone has a dark secret and a bloody motive.
What’s the connection between the N.O.P.D., Krewe of Rex, and southern mafia? How is the Russian special forces, C.I.A., and U.S. Public Health Service involved? Why is the Cuban army trying to kill them? And, what’s up with the mysterious and secret voodoo-like sect that practices human sacrifice? Wyatt and Lucy must learn the answers or die.
