Overview: A catholic priest is found, savagely murdered, at a hotel in Budapest, his bodyguards massacred as well. Only a rabbi survives the butchery, to be rescued, bruised and amnesic, from the hotel roof. Both clergymen were investigating a mysterious symbol, etched in blood, which only occurs at Jewish cemeteries and places of pogroms. Suspecting sorcery—of a type Himmler and other Nazis had often practiced—an exorcist, member of a very secretive Order, convinces another rabbi, a claustrophobic meteorologist, a French countess, two archaeologists, and two vampires, to help him continue the investigation at a castle in Provence.
By then, uncovering what the symbol represents has already ignited a deadly race for an unusual scroll, on both sides of the Atlantic. Now, as passionate arguments about anti-Semitism, historical accuracy, blood feuds, faith and science, rage at the castle, neo-Nazis, spies, assassins, and even vampires, try to take back the scroll.
When the lead archaeologist partly deciphers it, it becomes clear a member of the group, the Freer of Souls, would have to survive a perilous journey underground, get to the Ark of the Covenant, and dare the unthinkable to prevent the End of Days. But now the priest’s killer, who has waited centuries to get revenge, stands in his way.
