Genre: Historical Fiction
01 The King’s Priest
The year is 971 AD. Ireland is riven by internal conflict and is the target of expansionist Viking ambition. In the aftermath of a bloody battle, an unusual priest stands against the chaos. Rannal must deny his savage past to unite Connacht and defeat the invaders. His actions rekindle a fellowship but pit him against a forgotten spectre from his former life.
The essence of the fabled Queen Medb is embodied in the women who must rise to the challenge of salvaging a future from the pyre of a ravaged land.
Centuries-long rivalries are renewed in a storm of events that echo the ancient sagas. Celtic and Norse cultures clash at the frontier of the Viking Empire, and the names of heroes will emerge to be proudly borne by their descendants for a thousand years.
02 Shield Maiden
In a portent of strife to come, late winter weather lashes the southwest of Ireland. Rannal’s sister, Gudrun, arrives on a lonely island in the Sionainne Estuary among a Viking invasion fleet commanded by the former King of the Foreigners in Munster. Ivar intends to reclaim his dominion, but his plan will trigger the rise in opposition of Ireland’s first national hero, Brian Boru. The turbulent struggle between these two rivals will frame decades of subsequent history as the Imperator Scottorum rises to power.
In Part 2 of the Four Masters Trilogy the action moves from Connacht deep into Leath Moga where Gudrun searches for the truth behind her husband’s disappearance. Rannal’s family must protect the growing settlement in Clonmacnoise as regal ambition sweeps men and women into conflict in an elaborate conspiracy played out under the raven banner.
Silver and gold have been promised to Ivar’s mercenary army, but blood and death are never far from where stolen wealth lies.
03 The Seeds of Heimdall
As the last decade of the first millennium approaches, the struggle for power in Ireland is intensifying. The High King, Mael Sechnaill Mór, seeks to dominate and is bent on conflict. One provincial king in particular stands in his way. In Munster, Brian Ború conceives an audacious plan to throw off the influence of the north, but treason stalks the halls of Ceann Coradh.
The hidden hand of politics has thrown fortunes and futures into turmoil in Rannal Halvorsen’s family, setting brother against brother. As they are drawn once more into the eye of the storm, fighting for their homeland, lessons must be learned, or all could be lost before they can confront the ultimate test of strength.
Viking warlords play to their own agendas, striving to maintain independence from the old order while vying for power among themselves.
In this, the concluding part of the Four Masters Trilogy, the escalating tensions brought by tribal, class, religious and cultural divisions bring a foretaste of the spiralling conflict between two giants of Irish history whose stories will dominate the next quarter of a century and echo down to today.
