Juan Goytisolo’s first novel, The Young Assassins, concerns a group of students who are intent on murdering a politician and who kill the student they have chosen as the assassin.

Virtues of the Solitary Bird: For Goytisolo, great writers are ?solitary birds? whose voices are an enchanting cry that pierces time. On his hospital bed, the persecuted narrator identifies with St John of the Cross. Through the scintillating successions of visions, soliloquies and ecstatic chants he converses with the banished saints. The agencies of repression have changed but, as in the past, a hideous revenge will be wrought on the heretic. Four hundred years ago, St John creatively ransacked in his writing the cultures of Christianity, biblical Judaism and Muslim mysticism. Juan Goytisolo now pays rich homage, with atonal dissonance and constant invention.

The Marx Family Saga: In Juan Goytisolo’s surreal fiction Karl and Jenny Marx sit on their sofa in Hampstead and watch a television documentary. Albanian refugees land on a private Italian beach flourishing photocopies of dollar bills in search of paradise Dallas. Find out how Karl reacts to the demise of the systems Josef Visionariovitch and Co. build on his word! Read all about the family life of the Marxes, moving upmarket from Dean Street to Highgate and beyond, yet never free of the hock shop!

Landscapes after the Battle: Trapped in his apartment in an immigrant district of Paris, the narrator is far from the high life of museums, elegant restaurants and boutiques. Within this imprisonment, his thoughts oscillate between revolutionary terrorism and pre-pubescent sexuality – a concern he shares with Lewis Carroll. Mirroring the conventions of Arabic texts, Landscapes After the Battle is to be understood from the perspective of its end; an end where the relationship between writer, the reader and the written is revealed as playful and humorous. The appearance of the comic in a novel by Juan Goytisolo is unexpected; like Dracula at a haemophiliacs? convention.
