1. Flambards (1968) – Twelve year old Christina is sent to live with her uncle and his two sons in the decaying country house, Flambards. Her uncle dominates the household with his sudden rages and callous cruelty, and her cousins Mark and Will could not be more different. Christina finds in stable-lad Dick a sympathetic friend to help steer her through the emotional undercurrents and discord which divide the Russell household.

2. The Edge of the Cloud (1969) – Christina and her cousin Will have run away to London, like a pair of fairy-tale lovers. Will’s passionate ambition to design, make and fly aeroplanes is a hard one to realize, and Christina also has battles to win, including coming to terms with the fact that she must always come second to Will’s love of aeroplanes. The Edge of the Cloud won the Carnegie Medal and is the second of the Flambards sequence of novels to be reissued in Oxford Children’s Modern Classics.

3. Flambards in Summer (1969) – Widowed during the First World War at the age of 21, Christina returns to Flambards in the hope of picking up the threads of the life she knew before her marriage. But the house is not the same – the paddocks are a jungle and the once busy stables are desolate. Christina sets herself to the task of returning Flambards to its former glory.
