Overview: … It seems to me that suspense is the significant element in every story—else what we are dealing with is not a story at all. A child who begs to be told a story does not want one without suspense in it. Suspense is the plot device which makes storytelling an art. The primitive man who, reciting the perils of the hunt, held his fellows spellbound as they crouched around the fire, was aware of the effect of suspense. Scheherazade saved her pretty neck from the executioner’s ax for a thousand and one nights by suspense, ending her narrative each evening at a point where the Caliph, unwilling to have her stop, postponed her fate another twenty-four hours in order to find out what happened next. This stratagem, repeated over and over again, not only saved the lovely head of the Oriental beauty, but also preserved for us the delights of the tales popularly known as the Arabian Nights. It has given modern magazine publishers the profitable inspiration for stories told in installments, “to be continued in the next issue”; its commercial advantages are exploited in the movie serial which leaves some Pauline in peril until the next week’s episode, as well as in radio’s soap operas which bid listeners tune in again tomorrow to see what the heroine will do under her crushing load of tragic burdens…
