After picking up a spirit infection during a routine investigation, Francoise goes off the grid in search of a cure, where she crosses paths with the mercurial Nicolas, whom she mistakes for a fellow hunter. But if she were less preoccupied with salvaging her career, she would realize sooner that Nicolas is just one of the many pseudonyms of Salocin, an essence-addicted ancient warlord obsessed with controlling the living. All too interested in having a new toy to play with, Salocin uses Francoise as a diversion from the many stresses of his post-death life. Intrigued with Francoise’s talents as well as with her weaknesses, he pulls her further away from the protection of Psychopomp, until he finally cuts the last string.
