Overview: Jonathan Hickman includes two welcome nostalgic nods in this week’s Fantastic Four that are so powerful that they practically carry the weight of the entire issue.
You’ll recall that Johnny Storm returned from the dead in last month’s issue. While the Avengers and the FF do battle with the Kree armada, everyone pauses and looks up in the sky. Sue Storm’s eyes are filled with tears as she covers he mouth in disbelief. Johnny has just emblazoned the sky with the famous Fantastic Four logo. If that doesn’t inspire the old goose bumps, Ben Grimm—tears running down his face—says “ain’t that somethin’.” Admittedly, I had a lump in my throat.
Ben has had a difficult time with the loss of his friend over the past year. While getting beat to a pulp by a group of Kree sentries, Ben just about concedes defeat. After seeing that Johnny was back, the hero gets back on his feet, pulls his arm back and lets out an “It’s Clobberin’ Time!” As a kid I was brought up on The Fantastic Four—these words were a part of my vernacular and were always welcome. They still are.
